Metaphor magic: If your mind was a garden

Metaphors offer a surprisingly powerful pathway to create new perspectives and change. In the garden of your mind, negative and critical thoughts about yourself represent weeds that need pulling.

So, if your mind was a garden what would it look like?

Beautiful landscape or a weed’s paradise or perhaps somewhere in between? Perhaps your garden is full of plants that other people have planted over the years.

If the landscape of your mind really was a garden – a place where you can create peace and beauty – what is the first thing you would do? You as the sole gardener are charged with the power to plant what you want and pull out what you don’t. What thoughts and beliefs about yourself would you plant? Plant an inspiring thought as though you were planting a tree you love.

I’ve put some topic ideas below to get you started. What you choose and what it means to you, is completely up to you.

roses… for love

daisies… for playfulness

violets… for peace

an oak… for strength

a willow… for adaptability

sunflowers… for enthusiasm

Have some fun with it. Create a beautiful garden in your mind. Create a garden you’ll love. And remember to tender to your garden regularly.

Food for thought...

This saying rather nicely sums up the philosophy behind my psychological coaching work and underpins why I choose to use the NLP methodology. I am a firm believer in teaching someone how to do something for themselves - it builds self-reliance and empowers them in the long-term. ~ Naomi
